The Jeep Cherokee is a medium-sized SUV designed to go after the Land Rover Freelander, Audi Q5 and BMW X3. How to stand out with a class of such diverse and talented opposition? Jeep has chosen the route of extremely controversial styling. The new car is certainly way more striking that we're used to from most boxy Jeeps – even the marque themselves describe the look as 'polarising'. The headlights are split (Nissan Juke style), the trademark grille dominates the front view like a row of airliner windows, while the upright teetering tail and boxy wheelarches give a somewhat moon buggy-esque look.
The new Cherokee is built on a version of the platform that's used for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and US Dodge Dart. It's unclear whether all versions will get four-wheel drive: Jeep simply describes it as a "no-compromise" model.
No technical details are available as yet, although Jeep says that fuel economy will be improved by more than 45 per cent over the previous Cherokee. It has also confirmed that it will be built at Chrysler Group's factory in Toledo, Ohio. Basically, we cannot wait to see it!!
